Sirach 36:1, 4-5, 10-17

Psalm 79

Mark 10:32-45

“…do for us whatever we ask of you.”  Mk. 10:35

“Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant;” Mk. 10:43

Lord, we ask so much of you in our prayers. I know you delight in listening to our petitions and giving us all that is good for us. I also know we can become very narrow minded in what we ask for. Like the brothers Zebedee, I can become focused on what I want you to do for me. I can fail to see the big picture and what you know is best. Your word today urges me to love you and others out of a servant heart. A servant heart is not self-serving. A servant heart doesn’t ask what I can get out of being kind. A servant heart is not proud, arrogant, jealous or envious. A servant heart seeks to please you and not myself. This is hard, Lord, because loving like you ask me to doesn’t’ come naturally. Too often I look out for number one. Thank you for this lesson today on greatness being a result of service. Help me to serve and not to count the cost. May I follow the example of your mother Mary who gave herself completely with a pure heart.  Amen
