December 26, 2020 Saturday ST. STEPHEN, FIRST MARTYR-B

Acts of the Apostles 6:8-10; 7:54-59

Psalm 31

Matthew 10:17-22

“Lord, Jesus, receive my spirit.” Acts 7:59

Lord, Deacon St. Stephen gave up his life as a witness to you and your truth. He could not remain silent or compromise in the face of persecution. You foretold that there would be much danger and opposition to your disciples. We can see the good that comes from his death.  He is an example of courage and faithfulness for all of us. His perseverance and courage encouraged others who faced martyrdom. His death, in some way, may have contributed to the conversion of St. Paul who became the greatest apostle, missionary and theologian of the Church. Belief in you spread throughout Israel and beyond. Give your strength to those today who undergo persecution for your name. I may not be in danger of death for my faith but I too am challenged by the hostile world to remain silent in the face of criticism.  Like Stephen, I rely on your grace to know what to say in defense of my faith. May I be a faithful witness to you in my family, business, community and nation. I will let Gospel values influence my vote, my use of money and my defense of the truth.  St. Stephen, pray for us.  Amen.
