They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the eleven and those with them…” The truth is that so often we are walking away from Christ; running in the opposite direction rather than following him. Why? Because we do not know him. We do not understand what he has done for us. We simply cannot grasp how someone can love us so much. We don’t know how to be loved unconditionally because we have been hurt so many times – but never by God. God’s will is our happiness; he desires to love us. What God wants is to be with us but we are often headed in the wrong direction. Slow to heart is what we are. Slow to love God and slow to be loved by him. We must pray for an intimate knowledge of Jesus Christ who is “the way, the truth, and the life” so we can love him more freely and follow him more closely. This is our life journey – the road to Jerusalem, where he suffered and died for us and rose on the third day to give us new life, to set us free from the bondage of sin and to open the gates of heaven for us so that we can truly be free and happy. We must go towards Jerusalem and not walk in the opposite direction. We must run towards Jerusalem and not far from it. On the road, Jesus meets us where we are. He shares with us, he talks to us, he walks with us even if we’re going in the wrong direction. He is ever so patient with us. Why? Because he loves us. Jesus wants what the Father wants for each one of us – true happiness. Follow Jesus, he will never steer you in the wrong direction. Jesus meek and humble of heart, make our hearts slow to leave you and quick to seek you. May we long to be with you and follow you all the days of our life on the road from Emmaus to the New Jerusalem.
