Psalm 16

John 17:20-26

“…so that they all may be one…”  John 17:21

Lord, it seems we live in a very divided world.  Where is the unity you so devoutly pray for to your Father?    Everywhere we look jealousy, hatred, fear and pride separate us from one another.  Envy and prejudice abound in so many of our relationships.  It seems the only time we come together is in a national crisis or disaster like a hurricane or 9-11.  And then it is only for a little while.  Lord, you didn’t pray that we would agree all the time.  You didn’t ask the Father to make us all think and act the same.  Your prayer is for us to recognize we are all children of the same Father and that makes us brothers and sisters.  Regardless of our race, color or creed we are all related in the most profound way.  Lord, I begin to do my part to unify in faith by praying for those who are different from me.  I can lift up in prayer my political enemy, my noisy neighbor and the rude driver.  I can look for what unites us rather than what divides us.  May your Spirit guide us to be one as you are with the Father.  Amen.
