Psalm 31

Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18

“And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.”  Mt. 6:18

Father in heaven, dare I ask you to look into my heart and see what is there.  I must admit my intentions are not always the best.  I am sometimes motivated by pride or a desire to appear holy to others.  I may look for attention and praise from others when I pray in community.   Your word teaches that these interior intentions put the focus on me rather than on you.  My works of charity, praying and fasting are most pleasing to you when done for you and not myself.   So, Lord, show me a better way.  Lead me to a relationship with you that has no strings attached.   I trust that the simple, hidden love in my soul is pleasing to you.   I really don’t need anything other than your love.  Grow within me a love that gives without counting the cost.  Mature my faith so I can be confident you hear every prayer of my heart.  Help me to fast from pride or selfishness or whatever separates me from you.   Then my sacrifice will be received by you and give you honor and not me.  Amen.
