2 Corinthians 9:6-11

Psalm 112

Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18

You are being enriched in every way for all generosity… 2 Cor. 9:8

“When you give alms do not blow a trumpet before you…to win the praise of others.”  Mt. 6:2

Lord, you ask us to look inside at our motives for giving alms.  It seems the reason for our giving is as important to you as the giving itself.  I know you want me to have a pure heart and love for my neighbor.  It’s clear that the self-seeking motives of the Pharisees do not please you.  It helps to appreciate that all I have comes from you.  You ask me to look and see your lavish generosity given to me out of love.  Your most abundant gift to me is grace.  Paul tells me you will provide more than enough grace to bear fruit for you.  This makes me think of the twelve baskets of left over bread after you fed the hungry people in the wilderness.  You never are cheap with your grace or any blessing which you want for me.  I read that I am “enriched in every way” when I am generous.  You will never be outdone in generosity.   Lord, help me develop a generous spirit with my time, talent and treasure.  I trust you will make all the grace I need, and then some, available to build your kingdom.  Amen.
