Psalm 23

Mark 6:30-34

…his heart was moved with pity for them…  Mark 6:34

Lord, what did you see in that vast crowd that moved your heart to pity.  Mark writes they were like sheep without a shepherd.  Sheep are so dependent on their shepherd for green pastures, fresh water and protection from predators.  Without a faithful shepherd the sheep will be scattered and lost.  Lord, our prideful human ways are focused on independence and self-determination.  We are accountable for our decisions and responsible for work and family duties.  But I must admit I am in need of a shepherd.  Without you I can do nothing–although I try.  When I try to go it alone I put myself at risk of giving into temptation and becoming a lost sheep.  Lord, help me today to be aware of your constant guidance and loving care.  Bring me to green pastures where I can live the abundant life you offer.  Fill me with the grace I so need to follow you and your will for me.  “The Lord is my Shephard: there is nothing I lack.”  Thank you, Good Shepherd, for providing all I truly need.  Amen.
