Daniel 3:14-20, 91-92, 95

Psalm Daniel 3:52-56

John 8:30-42

“Amen, Amen, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.”  John 8:34

Lord, the story of the history of mankind is to live in freedom. The struggle of the human race against tyranny and domination is continuous. Your dialog with the Jews today exposes we can be slaves to sin and not even know it. We can be so bound up in bad patterns and destructive habits that we don’t realize that we are in slavery. You came to shed light on this darkness. You call us to break the habits of pride and selfishness. You poured out you grace of merciful forgiveness from the cross. Jesus, you came so we could be free of the thoughts, words and deeds that harm us and others. I want to be free of what holds me captive, Lord. Today I will expose one thing in my life to you that is holding me back. One way that is blocking my friendship with you. In this Lenten season help me to fast from near occasions of sin where temptation lives. May I turn away from this prison of the heart and choose freedom. I need your help, Lord, to change. Thank you for your grace and your abundant mercy.  Amen.
