Exodus 1:8-14, 22
Psalm 124
Matthew 10:34—11:1
Our help is in the name of the Lord… Ps. 124:8
“…whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” Mt. 10:39
Lord, at first reading your instructions in the gospel today seem harsh and divisive. But knowing you, that can’t be the real message. You are describing to your Apostles the cost of being a disciple. The mission of your followers is a demanding one that involves many sacrifices and laser-like focus on you. At the same time you love the family and encourage commitment and faithfulness in marriage and in raising children. I believe you are telling us to examine our priorities and where you fit in them. You being first in every part of our lives is necessary to bear the fruit in the kingdom you have chosen us to bear. It’s ironic that putting you first and foremost in life will result in my being more loving, understanding and compassionate in all my relationships, especially that of my family. By imitating you I become a better parent, grandparent, sibling and son or daughter. I give myself not only to you but to those I live with each and every day. The closer I am to you the more peaceful, humble and generous I become to everyone. So your words are not so harsh after all. Thank you, dear Jesus. Amen.
