Matthew 5:43-48

We want you to know, brothers and sisters, of the grace of God…  2 Cor. 5:1

“So be perfect…”  Matthew 5:48

Lord, you know me better than I know myself. You invite me to conversion, to change, growth and maturity in faith.  You want me to share the goods with which you’ve blessed me. And most of all you call me to love not just those people I like but even my enemies, those who hate me and those who want to harm me. Today, my love is far from perfect like yours. But to be perfect at all these things—are you expecting too much of me? Your grace can do amazing things in my life–but perfection? You might as well tell me to fly! I know I can do better. I can practice virtue and work at self-giving. I can even go beyond just sharing my excess time and goods. I can reach out to people I don’t know or have anything in common with–even those who oppose my beliefs. But perfect? Even the saints weren’t perfect. Lord guide my heart to be as complete and full of love as you desire. Make my words and actions as encouraging and helpful as you desire. I give myself to you, do with me what you will.  Amen.
