“Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me.” John 13:8
Lord, washing someone’s feet was a task that could not be asked of the lowliest slave. The Son of God on his knees washing road dirt from the feet of his disciples is a picture hard to imagine. But I guess this was a sign of what you would do the next day: give yourself completely to the cross. How much you loved these men who had followed you to this day. You even washed the feet of the one who would betray you. Did you chuckle at Peter’s hesitation to have you wash his feet? Cleanse me from whatever obstacles that hold me back from giving myself completely to you. Wash away any pride or selfishness that keeps me from humbly serving my brothers and sisters. How different would this world be if we all followed your example and washed each other’s feet. Lord, keep the picture of your living gift before my eyes today. Amen.
