Mark 12:38-44

Elijah said to her, “Do not be afraid.”  1 Kings 17:13

“…be she from her poverty, has contributed all she had.”  Mk. 12:44

Lord, the powerful, influential scribes got a lot of attention due to their large contributions to the temple treasury.  No one but you noticed the poor widow and her donation.  Her gift of everything she had got God’s attention.  How easy it is for us to overlook the humble, needy and powerless in our world.  They can be “invisible” people.  But you praised her for her generosity and selflessness.  Because of her trust in God she was not afraid and like the widow in the first reading was rewarded.  Jesus, I don’t know if I have the faith to do what she did.  I seem to be more like the scribe who gave from his surplus and not his poverty.  You showed us all the way by giving everything for us on your cross.  You held nothing back in reserve.  It’s not just about money but giving of time, attention and love to our families, neighbors and everyone we meet.  It’s about trusting that you will care for us when we surrender to you in everything.   Lord, please give me the faith of the widow.   I know you love a cheerful giver.  Amen
