2 Kings 2:6-14

Psalm 31

Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18

“And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.” Matthew 6:4

Lord, most of us can spot a phony a mile away.  A self-serving person can sometimes fool us but not for long.  Whether in politics, the business world or even family or friends, our true motives can be disguised for a while but not forever.  You encourage us to not be that way in our prayer, charity and fasting.  For when we try to impress others with our holiness or goodness, we miss the mark and our prayers and deeds are false.  The real “me”—who I am—comes out when nobody is looking.  Does that please you?  Lord, I turn to you in faith to purify my motives in how I relate to you.  Guide my heart and my innermost desires, to please you first and always.  Look into my innermost being and connect with me so I can live for you first and foremost.  I pray that when I serve you in whatever way you call me it will be out of love and a pure desire to glorify you.  Remove from me any selfish motives or self-serving ways that are obstacles to growing in faith and complete trust in you.  Lord, I know I cannot hide anything from you.  May your light and your love shine within me today.  Amen.
