Deuteronomy 4:1, 5-9
Psalm 147
Matthew 5:17-19
“…for what great nation has gods so close to it as the Lord, our God…” Dt. 4:7
Lord, in his farewell speech to the people he had led to freedom, your main-man Moses encouraged them to be faithful to their covenant with you. He told them that obedience is the key to success in their future residence in the land you gave them. He stressed how important it was for them to remember how blessed they were and to teach their children about God’s goodness. He knew the people would face temptations and very hard times as they entered the land that was given to them. So, Moses went back to basics and urged the people to remain faithful in how they lived. You told your disciples, and us, to maintain the relationship God desired with mankind. This relationship is based on obedience to the first two primary commandments: love of our Father and love of neighbor. Lord, may I welcome a close encounter with you this Lent. Bring me near to your most Sacred Heart of mercy by my prayers, fasting and works of charity. May all I think, say and do honor your glory. Amen.
