Philippians 2:1-4

Psalm 131

Luke 14:12-14

…humbly regard others as more important than yourselves… Philippians 2:3

“…invite the poor…”  Luke 14:13

Lord, both of these verses go against our grain. You are well aware of our tendency to socialize with people who are like us. We also sometimes give with the hope of getting something back in return. I don’t think you disapprove of families and loved ones celebrating life together. I think your point is for me to be more open to those who are different. You call me to be generous to those who can’t pay me back.  You invite me to not just write a check for charity but give some of myself in friendship, compassion and love to someone outside my social circle. The word today reminds me that we are all created in God’s image—all are his children. Lord, tomorrow we will honor the men and women who have gone before who you have made Saints. You had a real soft spot in your heart towards those who found life difficult.  Lord, today help me to be more aware of the needs of my brothers and sisters with unconditional love.  May your grace guide me to open up my heart a little wider to someone new today.  Amen.
