Psalm 34

2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18

Luke 18:9-14

From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me… 2 Timothy 4:8

“O God, be merciful to me a sinner.”  Luke 18:13

Lord, one of the largest sections in our bookstores is the Self-Improvement section. Seems we can buy a book that will guide us to become better at just about everything. We can become, among other things, a better parent, businessperson, gardener or golfer. The Pharisee in today’s parable wouldn’t buy one of those books. In his prayer he compared himself to the sinful tax collector and listed his accomplishments and successes. He nearly strained a shoulder joint patting himself on the back. The tax collector, on the other hand, admitted his sinfulness and complete dependence on your mercy. His prayer was happily received by our Father. Today, Lord, I’m going to take a break from putting myself down and from trying to become perfect. I’m just going to rest in your presence and delight that you love me just the way I am.  I can’t begin to list all the ways you have loved and blessed me. You owe me nothing yet have given me everything. I look forward to the crown that awaits me thanks to your grace and mercy.  Amen.
