“Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.”  Lk. 10:42

Lord, in Sacred Scripture, you frequently teach us how important service is in the Christian life. Just last Sunday we heard your parable of the Good Samaritan who served the man beaten and left to die by the roadside. Today we hear about your time with Martha and Mary. Martha worked hard to serve you with much needed food and drink. Mary chose to just sit in your presence and to be blessed with your words.  Did Mary know that her time with you could be short, so she did not want to leave your feet for even a moment? How would I choose to spend time with you if I were in their place?  Knowing myself, I’d probably pick the practical tasks to ensure you were refreshed with food and drink. Each week I have opportunities to either sit with you in Eucharistic Adoration or do something else much less rewarding.  Quietly resting in your presence is never a waste of time. Mary gave Jesus her full attention. Martha took care of Jesus’ hunger and thirst; Jesus took care of Mary’s hunger and thirst for his message of mercy and compassion. Lord, help me to find that good balance between labor and prayer.  Amen
