1 Kings 21:17-29

Psalm 51

Matthew 5:43-48

Have mercy on me, God, in your goodness… Psalm 51:3

“…love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”  Matthew 5:44

Lord, it is wise for us as we grow to take the best qualities and practices of our parents and imitate them.  They teach us what works and what doesn’t work. As children of our heavenly Father, we do well to listen to him. Our Father, among many things, respects our freedom. Our Father provides protection and what we need to live. He is more noted for his unlimited mercy and forgiveness. He is the God of second chances. Nothing I do can diminish his love for me or lessen his hopes for my faithfulness. You say today to love enemies and persecutors. How can I expect respect and love from God if I refuse to offer love and respect to others? Lord, I confess to be weak and selfish and often choose revenge and retaliation against those who cross me or harm me or my family. You don’t expect me to like them, but you do expect me to respect them and treat them with kindness. I rely on your grace as I lift up in prayer all those who oppose or oppress me.  Amen.
