1 Kings 18:20-39
Psalm 16
Matthew 5:17-19
“How long will you straddle the issue? If the Lod is God, follow him…”1 Kings 18:21
“But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” Mt. 5:19
Lord, the Israelites were surrounded by people who worshiped a strange god called Baal. So, despite being warned by your prophets, like Elijah, to not stray from the true God they continued to be seduced by the ways of the idol worshippers. Elijah’s demonstration of complete trust in God is a powerful example for everyone. In our culture today we are surrounded by people who do not obey your commandments and as a result ‘Multiply their sorrows who court other gods.” (Psalm 16:4). We tend to “straddle the issue” and try to live in both worlds. We accept and accommodate actions that are forbidden by the commandments. We fail to teach our children by word and example how to be faithful to you. We accept idols into our lives in a vain attempt to achieve happiness. Lord, I cannot measure the depth of your love for us nor your abundant mercy. I trust that you will grant me the grace to follow your word, to stay faithful to you in all ways and to be light and salt in this divided world. Amen.
