2 Peter 1:16-19

Mark 9:2-10

His dominion is an everlasting dominion… Dn. 7:14

And he was transfigured before them… Mk. 9:2

Lord, you had just outlined for your followers the conditions of discipleship and what would happen to you upon reaching Jerusalem.  They had just heard that being your disciple involved self-denial and the cross.  When you predicted your suffering, rejection and execution it had to be like a kick in the gut to them.  But your transfiguration on the mountain top gave them reassurance, encouragement and offered them a preview of resurrection.  Later upon their persecution they surely remembered this day on the mountaintop and were strengthened by that memory.  Lord, in each Mass the bread and wine are transfigured into your body and blood.  Not in the same way as on the mountaintop but in an even better way.  Your gift of Eucharist is an everlasting gift that can transform us as well.  As Peter, James and John came down the mountain they were prepared for work in the valley.  As I leave the Mass, I too am equipped for work in the valley of my family, workplace, community and world.  Dear Jesus, thank you for showing the world your glory and for the hope it offers.  Amen.
