Isaiah 58:1-9

Psalm 51

Matthew 9:14-15

My sacrifice, O God, is a contrite spirit; a heart contrite and humbled… Ps. 51:19

This, rather, is the fasting that I wish…Is. 58:6

Lord, fasting is one of the three pillars of our Lenten practices.  A lot of us settle for giving up a food or drink or something else.  I know you are pleased with whatever we choose to fast from.  We hear through your prophet Isaiah that oftentimes those kind of fasts are not as worthy of you as pursuing justice and relieving the suffering of others.  I hear that a contrite and humble spirit is a good start to approach your throne this Lent.  When I see and do something about hunger, homelessness and poverty I am serving you.  When I help a neighbor carry their burdens or visit the lonely I am serving you.  Then I will become closer to you and restore relationships in the human family.  Lord, may my fasting truly be penance for my sins.  May my fasting cleans my heart and help me see you in my brothers and sisters.  Bless me this Lent, dear Jesus, and keep me focused on you and the road to your Resurrection.  Amen.
