Reform your ways and your deeds… Jer. 7:3
“While everyone was asleep his enemy came and sowed weeds…” Mt. 13:25
Lord, anyone who cares about their garden must keep up with the weeds that compete with the flowers or vegetables. It’s important to identify the difference between the weeds and the crop so the good plants are not pulled along with the weeds. We are all sinners and have weeds in our spiritual gardens. We have not always been alert to how silently and slowly the weeds of pride, selfishness, bigotry, and unforgiveness can begin to grow in our hearts. The passions of lustful thoughts, envy and jealousy can begin very small but if neglected can become great offenses against you. Lord, help me to stay alert to the temptations offered by the world, the flesh and the devil. How I treat others does matter. I am accountable for my attitude toward those who are not like me or who are in need of my attention and care. Do not allow me to be asleep to the dangers presented by our culture of pleasure and profit. I trust in your grace, my Lord and God, as sufficient to keep me in your mercy and love. Amen.
