Isaiah 42:1-7

Psalm 27

John 12:1-11

Mary took a liter of costly perfumed oil…and anointed the feet of Jesus and dried them with her hair.  John 12:3

Lord, with only six days before your death on the cross your friends celebrated life.  You raised Martha and Mary’s brother Lazarus from the dead.  It was a happy day, a day to express love and gratitude.  What stood out from the party was the extravagant love and generosity of Mary.  The value of the anointing oil was nearly one-third of a year’s pay.  No wonder Judas and others were shocked.  What can I learn from this story?  Is it the depth of love that I can have for your gift of life?  Does it provide an example of how greed and selfishness can cloud our minds to what’s really important?  Lord, teach me how to love more and forget the cost.  Help me to remember this story as I walk to the cross with you this Holy Week.  Our Lenten journey is nearly complete.  Have I grown in humility, generosity, gratitude and love?  Hear my prayer, O Lord, to make me more like your friend Mary who seems to have her priorities right all the time.  Guide my choices with your grace and blessing.  Amen.
