John 5:31-47
“I see how stiff-necked this people is…” Exodus 32:9
“But you do not want to come to me to have life”. John 5:40
Lord, human nature didn’t change in the 1,200 years or so from Moses to your day. The people you freed from slavery turned to other gods and refused to worship the Father. The people of your time rejected you and your offer of eternal life. Both stubbornly stuck to their own ways rather than to the ways of repentance. Same thing today when we turn to gods of our own creation. When we worship money, pleasure, technology or ourselves we are no better. Our stubbornness keeps us from seeing so many of your blessings because our hearts are closed to you. Lord, forgive me when I look to the gods of man for safety and protection. Open my heart to the abundant life you won for me on the cross. You didn’t reject Moses’ plea for the people, please don’t reject mine. With your grace I will be free of the stubborn ways of the past. Amen.
