He was pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins…Is. 53:5
Lord, we are familiar with sacrifice. Giving of ourselves for the sake of others is a daily pattern of life for us. Spouses in love give their lives to each other. Parents give up their own free time to care for their children. The husband of a wife with Alzheimer’s devotes himself entirely to her care. Teachers work hard to get their students to learn. Our military and law enforcement personnel offer their lives for our freedom and safety. Lord, you endured the humiliation and agony of the cross for us; for me. There was no limit to what you have done for me. You were “pierced for my offenses, crushed for my sins.” You assumed punishment for my crimes. Because of your selfless act, I have won a pardon. Thank you, dear Jesus, for your undeserved gift of salvation which I cannot earn on my own. May I also, like you on the cross, offer my spirit into your hands. May I follow your example of self-giving for the welfare of my family, parish and community. This is indeed a Good Friday. Amen.
