December 28, 2017 Thursday in the Octave of Christmas THE HOLY INNOCENTS, MARTYRS
1 John 1:5-2:2
Psalm 124
Matthew 2:13-18
Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by night… Mt. 2:14
Herod…ordered the massacre of all the boys in Bethlehem… Mt. 2:16
Lord, two men each faced with a threat responded in two very different ways. Herod reacted to the news of a potential rival for his kingdom with violence and ordered the death of innocent children. Joseph reacted to the threat of danger by listening to the message of an angel then took extraordinary measures to protect his child and wife. One lived in darkness the other in light. One was filled with anger the other with trust in the will and protection of God. Lord, you could not have picked a better man to provide and care for yourself and Mary. His faithfulness and prudent judgment is a perfect model for us. Lord, when I am faced with decisions may I come first to you in prayer in a desire to always follow your plan. Lord, keep me from any anger or distrust that can destroy relationships and break up families. When called to respond to difficult circumstances or events beyond my control help me to take a moment to ask you for guidance. I trust in your ways, dear Jesus. Keep my family safe from all peril. Amen.
