“Go and do likewise” Luke 10:37

Lord, what must I do to get to heaven?  Is it enough to believe in you and read the bible?  Can I get to heaven by going to Mass on Sunday and putting money in the basket?  How about avoiding sin and trying hard to be a good person?  You told the lawyer to love.  You told him who to love: God and his neighbors.  You told him to express his love in action.  Love, without expression, is empty.  We all know that.  But you tell us to love the stranger, the outcast, those who don’t look like us, talk like us or think like we do.  Lord, how hard it is to love someone who isn’t at all interested in loving back.  I guess today we could include in that group the illegal immigrant, the gang-banger, the Muslim, the racist.  You love them all, don’t you?  Help me today to begin by looking at our commonality and not our differences.  All are made in the image of the Father.  Amen.
