Acts 6:8-10; 7:54-59
Psalm 31
Matthew 10:17-22
Now Stephen, filled with grace and power was working great wonders and signs… Acts 6:8
Lord, you called Stephen to the humble service of a deacon: providing food and support to widows and others in the community who were in need. This work was not flashy or dramatic. His daily, quiet duties were carried out with the help of the Holy Spirit. It pleased you for him to serve in this way. But then you called him to a more public and dramatic form of service when he confronted those who challenged the people’s faith in you. We remember him for how he gave his life for you in service to the poor and in his violent death. Lord, to what will you call me to today? Will you send me to console a neighbor whose husband just died? Will you call me to give a hand of welcome to a stranger or right an injustice? Lord, whatever it is, I pray the Spirit I received at my baptism will strengthen and guide my work. I depend on your Spirit to help me in everything. I surrender to you, Lord, knowing that I can count on you in every situation I may face. St. Stephen, pray for us. Amen.
