My son, conduct your affairs with humility… Sirach 3:17

“…the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” Luke 14:11

Lord, for some of us getting behind the wheel of a car changes us. We’d never elbow our way in front of others in the grocery checkout line or movie theatre. Nor would we yell at or honk at someone we meet on the sidewalk. But when driving we become fierce competitors for first place.  Being humble, like your word calls us to today, is not lowering ourselves so much as raising up everyone else. Being humble is respecting the dignity of our fellow man and woman, treating them as brothers and sisters and as beloved sons and daughters of our heavenly Father. We’ve all been created with a diversity of gifts and given many opportunities to develop and use them. So help me to appreciate the specialness of those you’ve placed near me. Guide me to do what I can to build up their faith in you and to make their lives better. A good teammate makes all those around them better. Jesus, help me to be humble as you were.  Grant me Lord, today, a receptive heart and the grace of humility and I will be at peace.  Amen.
