Lamentations 2:2, 10-14, 18-19

Psalm 74

Luke 2:41-51

…his mother said to him, “Son, why have you done this to us?”  Luke 2:48

Lord, how many parents have been in this situation and asked this question to their children. I would say most.  This story shows a real human family along with the inevitable challenges of parenting. Mary and Joseph were very worried about you for three days. You had begun to learn your Father’s will in the midst of the teachers in the temple. I believe you learned a lot from your human mother and father too about God’s love for all people. I admire how Mary and Joseph, while not understanding fully your answer, maintained a patient and gentle response. Your mother kept all her trials in her immaculate heart. Lord, this story shows us that family relationships and how we live them are a high priority for us. When everyone in a family focuses on God’s call for one another, the family becomes more loving and peaceful.   You went home to Nazareth and were obedient and respectful to your parents. At the same time, you grew in wisdom and understanding of your mission from your Father. But we learn that true discipleship goes beyond even family. Your parents would gradually grow to understand this too.  Amen.
