1 Kings 17:7-16
Psalm 4
Matthew 5:13-16
“I have designated a widow there to provide for you.” 1 Kings 17:9
…the jar of flour did not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry as the Lord had foretold… 1 Kings 17:16
Lord, only you know what went through the mind of the desperate Elijah when you told him you had picked out a widow to care for his needs. Did he think that a widow was an odd person to go to for help since most widows could barely provide for themselves much less a stranger? The same for the widow. Did she wonder how she could help this strange man since she and her son were on the brink of starvation? Lord, you pick the most wondrous examples of faith and trust as witnesses to your goodness. Elijah and the widow provided for each other as you never let her panty come up empty. She also allowed him to stay in her home knowing he was a wanted man and a potential danger to her and her son. All because they both trusted that you would follow through with your promises. Lord, you know my needs to, and you may right now be in the process of bringing a stranger to help me. You ask us to be salt and light to each other. May your grace allow me to follow the example of the widow and Elijah. Amen.
